Singapore-based Kit Lim’s career is a powerful narrative of how one can transition from a successful marketing professional to a passionate advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Her journey reflects a deep-seated belief in the importance of personal growth and societal impact and serves as an inspiring example for others considering a similar shift.

In this conversation with Collective for Equality, Kit shares her journey towards a career transformation and how she has managed to thrive in her new role.

For over 15 years, Kit built a solid career in business development and marketing communication. However, in 2019, she began to feel a sense of stagnation in her role. “I felt like I was in a plateau and wasn’t growing further. It alarmed me,” Kit recalls. This ignited a desire for change, leading her to explore new avenues within her organization. It was during this period of introspection that she became increasingly involved in diversity and inclusion initiatives.

Kit’s interest in DEI was not entirely new, but it took centre stage as she started to engage more deeply with these issues at work. “I was already doing work in diversity and inclusion on the side. It was a part of my role, but not the focus,” she explains. As her involvement grew, so did her passion for the cause, prompting her to consider a full-scale career transition into DEI. “The more I worked on these initiatives, the more I realized that this is where my passion lies.”

Transitioning to a new field, especially one as complex and nuanced as DEI, was not without its challenges. Kit knew she needed to bridge the knowledge gap between her marketing expertise and the demands of a DEI professional. “I worked really hard at that,” she says, reflecting on the extra hours she dedicated to learning and the sacrifices she made to make the transition. Kit pursued relevant certifications, including a diversity and inclusion course from the University of South Florida, which she completed online in 2021. She also earned a coaching certification that became instrumental in leading difficult conversations with senior stakeholders during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Coaching was a game-changer for me,” Kit notes. The skills she developed through coaching not only enhanced her ability to communicate effectively with leaders but also helped her navigate the emotional and psychological aspects of DEI work. “DEI is not just about policies and initiatives; it’s about understanding people, their biases, and how to foster genuine inclusion,” she adds.

Mentorship played a pivotal role in Kit’s journey. She sought guidance from seasoned DEI professionals who could offer insights into the realities of the role. “The mentoring was really important for me to move into that space,” she emphasizes. Kit strategically connected with mentors who were already established in DEI, learning from their experiences and understanding the challenges she might face. Now, having successfully transitioned into her new role, Kit has become a mentor herself, guiding others who aspire to work in DEI. However, she continues to seek mentorship, believing that there’s always more to learn. “I’m still learning every day. This field is constantly evolving,” she says.

One of the key lessons Kit has learned and now shares with others is the importance of self-awareness, especially regarding unconscious biases. Early in her DEI journey, Kit uncovered many of her unconscious biases and this revelation drove her to advocate for greater self awareness and understanding of what our biases are. “It was an eye-opener for me. I realized that if I have these biases, then others might have them as well,” she reflects. Kit now stresses the importance of recognizing and addressing these biases as a crucial step in driving systemic change within organizations.

Kit also speaks passionately about the role of male allies in the fight for gender equality. “You can’t achieve gender equity without the support of the other gender,” she asserts. Kit advocates for allyship programs that educate men on unconscious biases and empower them to be active participants in fostering an inclusive workplace. “It’s about creating a culture where everyone feels responsible for DEI, not just those who are directly affected by inequality.”

Leading DEI initiatives within a corporate setting presents its own set of challenges, particularly in aligning leadership teams with these values. Kit highlights the importance of having a leadership team that is genuinely committed to DEI. “It’s about having your leadership team believe in the same thing,” she says. While some leaders are fully on board with DEI, others may view it as less of a priority. Kit believes that true leadership in this area requires making DEI a central part of the organizational culture, not just a checkbox on a corporate agenda.

Kit Lim’s career shift from marketing to DEI leadership is a compelling story of resilience, dedication, and passion. Her journey underscores the importance of continuous learning, mentorship, and the courage to challenge one’s own biases. As Kit continues to champion DEI, she remains committed to creating more inclusive workplaces and inspiring others to do the same. Her story is a powerful reminder that with the right mindset and support, it’s possible to reinvent oneself and make a significant impact in a field that aligns with one’s values and aspirations.
